Are you adventurous? Would you go to Alaska? Alaska is the 49th US state and often called “The Last Frontier.” Most people think it’s always freezing in Alaska, but that’s not true. If you want to do some sightseeing, go in the summer when it’s warm. It’s true that Alaska is sparsely populated, but over a million people visit the state every year.

There are many things to do in Alaska. If you like to be out and about, you could go hiking or go fishing. If you like animals, you could go whale watching or try dog mushing. If you feel lucky, you could be a gold miner for a day. Sifting through rocks is not easy, but maybe you’ll find enough gold for a second trip to Alaska!

Gary just returned from Alaska. Listen to today’s English lesson to hear him tell Romeo about his favorite parts of this trip.

Romeo:  How was your trip?

Gary:  It was amazing!

Romeo:  Yeah, don’t rub it in.

Gary:  So, I saw the Northern Lights. You know what those are, right?

Romeo:  Oh yeah.

Gary:  The Aurora Borealis. Beautiful! But, I will tell you this… it was freezing!

Romeo:  Yeah. It’s Alaska.

Gary:  Up there it’s sparsely populated. I did have a lot of fun hiking. It’s fun just to be out and about sightseeing, looking at mountains and birds and trees and the ocean and the rivers. So many things!

Romeo:  Did you get to do the dog mushing?

Gary:  No, I didn’t do that. I can’t call myself a gold miner either.

Romeo:  You are the most adventurous person that I know. How could you not have done that?

Gary:  I didn’t find any gold while I was up there, sifting through the water.

Romeo:  So disappointing.

Gary:  I know, I know.

Romeo:  Alright, well, I won’t go to that part when I take my trip. I’m going where I can find some gold.

Gary went to Alaska, and he is telling Romeo about his trip. It takes a lot of time and money to get to Alaska, so not everyone visits the state. Romeo might be jealous of adventurous Gary because he tells Gary, “Don’t rub it in.” But that doesn’t stop Gary from talking about his amazing Alaska experience!

What does Gary think about Alaska? First, it’s freezing. Second, the Northern Lights are beautiful. Third, it’s a great place for sightseeing and hiking. Fourth, it’s sparsely populated. Romeo wants to know if Gary tried dog mushing. Gary didn’t, and he didn’t find gold either. Romeo thinks this is disappointing. He’s planning to become a gold miner on his own Alaska trip.

What do you know about Alaska? Would you like to visit a place that is sparsely populated?

No. I don’t know exactly about alaska. But I have heard that place, only a name.

Yes. I thought I would like to visit a place that is sparsely populated when I was young. I thought I was lonely when I was young. I didn’t like some places where there were many people. Often, I imagined that I myself lived a small house in wild, and I myself went to work in the early morning and went home in the twilight. I liked twilight so much that every twilight I felt some sad. I would thought there should be smoke from kitchen chimneys in every twilight.

Also I imagined I would go any sparsely populated places. In some time the feeling was so strong.
