Do you like surprises? Imagine this: You enter a contest to win tickets to a concert where your favorite musician is performing. You know it is unlikely that you’ll win, but you think to yourself, “What if?” Then, imagine you get the phone call telling you that you’ve won the tickets! What an amazing surprise! It completely knocks your socks off to know you’ll get to go to the concert!

We say that something knocks someone’s socks off when it surprises them. For example, if you plan a birthday party for your sister but don’t tell her about it until the last minute, you’ll probably knock her socks off. If your boss surprises you with a promotion, he probably knocked your socks off, too! It’s always great to get surprised by good news.

Andy and Kelsey are working on a surprise for Sheila, but Andy has some news that might knock Kelsey’s socks off. Watch the video to find out what it is.

3. Watch - Watch the video without reading the dialog.

Andy_H:  What if… What if we wrote a song for Sheila?

Kelsey:  That’s a great idea! We can write her a birthday song. OK, so what’s something that would really knock her socks off?

Andy_H:  We’ve got to think of something really fun. What does Sheila like?

Kelsey:  Well, she seems to like work a lot…

Andy_H:  Yep.

Kelsey:  And organizing things…

Andy_H:  Oh yeah!

Kelsey:  And she seems to like you….

Andy_H:  Yeah! That seemed unlikely, but we became friends.

Kelsey:  Is that what it is? You two are friends?

Andy_H:  Yeah…. I mean, right?

Kelsey:  Oh, I don’t know. I was just asking.

Andy_H:  It’s hard to tell with Sheila. At first, I thought she only asked me out because she wanted someone to go to the party with her. But, well, we had a really great time.

Kelsey:  Nice! So, you two get along really well?

Andy_H:  Well, we do hang out every Friday or Saturday night.

Kelsey:  So, you aren’t really dating?

Andy_H:  Well, I never really thought of it. We do have a great time…

Kelsey:  If it’s just a friendship, that’s cool, too.

Andy_H:  Well, now that you mention it... we, maybe, could be, maybe, dating. We do have a really great time. I mean, when she’s out of work, she’s a lot more relaxed. She likes my jokes, and we like doing all the same things…

Kelsey:  I didn’t mean you should change things.

Andy_H:  No, you’re right! Ohhhh! You know what would really knock her socks off… what would surprise her more than anything?

Kelsey:  A funny song?

Andy_H:  If I asked her to be my girlfriend! This is going to be great!

Kelsey:  Oh, I mean, I didn’t mean to….

Andy_H:  Oh, no, no… it all makes sense now. This is going to be fun. Thank you, Kelsey!

Kelsey:  You’re welcome?

Andy and Kelsey are trying to write a birthday song for Sheila, but they are having a hard time thinking of a topic. She likes work a lot, and organizing things, but she also seems to like Andy. Kelsey wonders if Sheila and Andy are just friends, or if there is something else to their relationship. Andy is not sure! He thought at first that they were just friends, but they get along really well and they have been hanging out every Friday. They might be dating!

Andy realizes that it would really knock Sheila’s socks off if he officially asked her to be his girlfriend. He thanks Kelsey for the idea, but Kelsey isn’t sure she did the right thing. It might change things too much if Andy asks Sheila out. Kelsey is a little big worried.

Do you like surprises? Have you ever asked anyone out?

When I was 12 years old I confessed to my classmate Viktoria that I like her so much. I knocked her and all my classmates’ socks off with that. They were shocked and laughed a lot.
I felt shyness.

Sometimes I think of something beautiful. If someday comes true, it’ll knock my socks off.

If the news are good, of cause I like the surprises. Is there anyone who doesn’t like good news? Who don’t like be surprised by good news?

Yes. When I was falling in love, I ever asked my boyfriend out. If the meaning of “ask someone out “ is dating.

But except that meaning, I ever usually asked my friends out to go shopping or playing balls or to the park and so on.
