Eating out can be expensive. Cooking at home can be a lot of work. But leftovers are both cheap and convenient.

Any time you have more food than you can finish, and you decide to save it for another day, that’s leftovers. Leftovers can come from something you cooked yourself, or they can come from a restaurant. If you can’t finish your dinner, you can always take the leftovers home by asking the waiter for a to go box or doggie bag. Hear Marni and Ella talk about leftovers.

Marni:  Ella, I am so full, and yet I still have like half of my meal on my plate.

Ella:  I know, what are you going to do? You don’t want it to go to waste.

Marni:  You’re absolutely right. Hello! Leftovers!

Ella:  Woo! I love leftovers.

Marni:  Me too. I mean, I don’t like to let anything go to waste.

Ella:  I find myself wasting leftovers a lot. I like having them there, because then I don’t have to go buy food. But then sometimes I just don’t eat it because I didn’t like the food already at the restaurant, but I felt obligated to take it home. But it usually goes to waste and I end up throwing it away.

Marni:  That’s too bad. That is a big waste of food. I don’t know, I always tend to eat them, because I’m pretty particular and I usually order something I like. Or if I’m somewhere at an event or something and there’s a bunch of food, I’ll always ask if I can take some home, because I’m kind of a fan of free food, or leftover food.

Ella:  Sometimes leftovers are looked down upon.

Marni:  You know, that’s true. I was in Venice, and I asked for a container to take my delicious pasta back to my hotel room, and the woman just looked at me like I was crazy. And I guess the entire city just doesn’t…They don’t take anything to go.

Ella:  I can’t imagine that.

Marni and Ella are out to eat. Marni is full and can’t finish her meal. She and Ella agree that she should take the rest to go so she can have the leftovers on another day.

Both Marni and Ella like leftovers. But Ella often lets her leftovers go to waste. She forgets to eat them, or takes leftover food home from restaurants even if she didn’t really like it.

Marni, on the other hand, hates letting food go to waste. She always takes leftovers home with her if she can’t finish a meal at a restaurant. But in some places, this is unusual. When Marni was in Venice, a waiter was very surprised when she asked if she could take her leftovers back to her hotel with her.

Do you like eating leftovers? In your country, is it normal to take your leftovers home with you when you can’t finish your meal at a restaurant?

Dear,Buttafly thanks for the explanations. I understood that you did not mean all Europeans are snobbish, but in case with leftovers it is just a “tradition” (in my counrty anyway). I always  keep out of pretentious people (they are not a sort of people I like).Wink

After the miracle of multiplication, Jesus told his disciples: “Collect the pieces that are left over so that nothing is wasted.” So they collected and filled twelve baskets full of pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten (John 6:12-13).

So, this kind of care is a divine principle we should follow! And Paul also explains: As it is written, the person who had much did not have too much, and the person who had little did not have too little (2 Corinthians 8:15).

We manage our posses, is a very important thing, because we have fruits’ tree, but money’s tree, we haven’t.  That’s what I always explain to my sons.

May God bless you all.

No problem with the leftovers , I used to in college , you know student who was far way from the family, so I kept some food when I return back from the college I eat it.
and for my opinion it’s respect for the food, that Allah gave(thinking of the famine) it to us so we should appreciated that even if  I’m not eating that food at least I give it to someone who appreciated that food and need it.

Dear friends, after reading all of your  comments , this is once again  what I would like  to add   to my previous post, do  you know why in the US people ask for a doggie bag ? I dont´know,  but my guess is that   not to  let the owner know that actually the food is for  you  , of course, it is understood that  your dog  has two legs and walks upright    .  Now ,i see that in another countries  you will be eyed at and considered a cheap person.  well, I am very cheap  hehehe

I had no doubts that Ukraine ( which is my native country),Azerbaijan, Russia will agree with my comments about the leftovers at a restaurant, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear the same attitude in Germany.  Buttafly, our countries have it in common as well as you and I have many things is common. I’m glad! Sorry, I can’t translate the word “snobbish”Frown

I like eating leftovers later, whenever I am full and not able to finish my meal at my home…..as I don’t want to let leftovers go to waste…As per my view food must not be wasted as we feel starving when we don’t get food ready at home…...hungry knows the importance of both fresh food and leftovers….I don’t know about the restaurant but yeah, it is normal to take food home left at the event lke in party or marriage caremony….

It’s better to have the food as much as we can eat than to waste it…. because it can be used by somebody who needs more than we do…... my grandmother used to say that “hunger knows no stale food, sleeping knows no bed”.. when we feel and need then we have to…. that’s y it’s good for every situation

amirelnaggar,  it is your right to take your lefovers back and you have paid your money, but don’t worry leftovers will not go to waste. The stuff of the restaurant knows what to do with them, that’s why they usually not happy when you ask to keep the leftovers for yourselfLaughing

I don’t mind to eat  the leftovers of the meal I  cooked myself. But the fresh meal is always better. :) In my country it is not politely to take your leftovers when you can’t finish your meal at the restaurant. A waiter would consider that you are very greedy or  ”homeless” :) or something like that. You can kindly ask a waiter to wrap the lefovers and a waiter will do it for you, but the reaction of the stuff of the restaurant will not be very pleasant, believe me. Another situation when you are in the “Terra Pizza”. They usually allow and don’t mind if you are going to take the leftovers of the pizza back to home.
