Beth:  So John, are you still playing basketball?

John:  Yeah. Josh and I play in city league every Wednesday night.

Beth:  Cool. How are you… How’s your team doing?

John:  We’re actually not so good. We’re 2 and 4 right now, but we have high hopes for tomorrow’s game.

Beth:  That’s cool. Do you have, um, any superstars on your team or are you the superstar?

John:  Well I kind of consider myself the superstar, but I think Josh considers himself the superstar, so it’ll come down to the stats at the end of the season to, to tell us who’s best.

Beth:  Sweet! Do you have a lot of fans who come and watch every game?

John:  No. Well, it’s, it’s a good night if one or two people show up, but, you know, to tell you the truth that kinda makes people like Josh a little bit nervous when they play. So, it’s probably better that nobody comes.

Beth:  Oh, I think what you need, uh, are some more fans.

John:  Well what we need are some cheerleaders. You wanna come and help us out?

Beth:  I’m not so sure about that.

Discussion

John sounds like he’s enjoying his basketball games, even though he’s not winning many of them. He likes playing with Josh and his other friends on the team.
John is joking around when he says that his team need cheerleaders. Can you tell from the sound of his voice that he’s being facetious? He doesn’t actually want Beth to be a cheerleader, because cheerleaders only attend serious basketball games, like those played in high school, college and professional leagues.
Have a great week!
