1978? Are you sure?
I thought it ended in 1979.
Yes, he is one of the Americans who repeatedly visited Iran.
I understand why Iran is proud of him too, but he was an American by choice.
America gets to be proud of him also.
He came here to live in peace and freedom, he went back to Iran to help those people left behind under the Regime.
He saved the sight of millions with his work.

Almost. He was an American, he fled the Regime and became one of us.
He was awarded the Enduring Face of Ophthalmology from American Ophthalmology Association (AOA),
In this context, “lasting” is not the same as “enduring” although the meanings are very similar. It is saying that the AOA recognized Dr. Khodadoust is an example of an ideal Ophthalmologist. Any Ophthalmologist who wants to be considered “great” should imitate the efforts of Dr. Khodadoust. An endowment is a cash award.
He also received the title of ‘top researcher of the Lifetime Achievement Award of AMA’ (American Medical Association. (A lifetime achievement award for his research)
He was also considered by many of his colleagues to be perhaps the best corneal graft surgeon. He certainly left a legacy of benefit to mankind.
America is proud of him too. We didn’t chase him off.
He died American. He was Iranian, he became American.
There are no hyphenated Americans. When he became an American, he became just as much an American as any of us are.
